It occurred to me, as I was yeeting marbles and avoiding even the tiniest scratch on my unusually sized rodent body.

Typically, I say that my pattern recognition is pretty awful, hence why I am bad at SHMUPs. I now don't think this is necessarily true.
Admittedly, the SHMUP library of games I have played is pretty limited in the grand scheme of things. Lots of Touhou and a smattering of other games.

I think my issue and where I struggle with SHMUPs is that there is a lot going on. Visually, auditory, etc.

I just can't take it in and cut out the useless noise to focus on what is important.

Horizontal arcade style shootemup Cycle Chaser H-5 is coming to Switch January 24 (it's been on Steam since 2023). This is another great looking one from Ratalaika Games. It has hand-drawn and vector-rendered 2D graphics, an FM soundtrack produced in YM2612, three weapon styles with three attack types each, and Free Run mode which makes the game accessible for all experience levels (I love stuff like that).

I think enough time has passed since I last tooted anything #Aleste related.

Specifically, to gush about GG Aleste 3 on the #GameGear

Modern games on old hardware are a fascinating subject, and I should really should dive deeper into it.

This is probably my favourite track from this particular game, but the OST as a whole is pretty good. It really shows off the sound compabilities that the GameGear had.

If you like #shmups, you really should check out GG Aleste 3 and Aleste as a series, especially the GG games and Super Aleste on the SNES.
GG3, for me, was a tough but rewarding playthrough. It served up a decent challenge, but I am not a competent shmup player.

Been playing some Eigengrau on Switch and it's an awesome game. It's on sale for another day or two, I believe- but it's also less than $10 to start. And it's a blast. It's a shooter, but with twists - you sometimes have to shoot in the direction of arrows or to touch certain squares/areas as you're shooting, to turn them all another color? It's wild.

If you're looking for a unique shooter, this is it.
