This Be The Verse

By Philip Larkin

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

This morning has been fun listening to my wife and daughter argue over how toxic 'Joe Goldberg' is. My wife is in the 'I can fix him' camp and my daughter is ripping her a new one, talking about how he's just a delusional narcissist and a hypocrit. I'm just listening, but very happy my daughter won't fall for a psycho with a pretty face. 🥰

WTF, people? Reading with your kids can be a highlight of their day, and yours. There is so much great children's literature out there, and sharing stories with your kids is a great way to connect. Having a small kid crawl in your lap with a book, or an older child asking to go to bed early so a great story can be continued is a joy. Yes, reading to children has a lasting positive effect on cognitive development and academic achievement, but this isn't just one more parental chore to check off the list. I know you're busy and likely exhausted, but put down the phones, pick up some books, and take just 10 minutes a day to immerse yourself and your child in a story. You'll both want more.

My daughter said, more than once, “This is the best day I’ve ever had.”

She still sees magic in clouds and puddles. She still gets excited by city lights at night.

The life I’ve built for my kids might look small from the outside, but it’s huge in the ways that count. Joy isn’t waiting in some far-off land or future plan. It’s right here. Right now. Right on our doorstep.

(And yes, raising children like this is, in some ways, a privilege. No denying that)

Good morning and happy Tuesday!

Back to work after being off tomorrow for a field trip with my youngest two kids. Their last elementary school field trip. My goodness.

My babies are getting old.

And my oldest went to Jr Prom this weekend.

I'm going to be feeling a certain way about the passing of time for a little bit...

This morning my 7yo asked if I’m happy I have children.

I told her that I am. I said that it’s like so much else in life, that it’s hard to know in advance but now that I have children I’m so glad that I do. I said, it’s added a lot to my life and has made me a better person.

She nodded sagely and said, “you mean better person than [other parent]” 😂😂

I was very quick to let everyone in the room know that was not what I meant!!

Good afternoon and happy Monday!

Spent the day on a class field trip to a large historic farm / manor with my two 5th graders. It was an interesting place to check out. A lot of history. And I am sure a lot that was not discussed in the time allotted. It was largely about life in the colonial era.

Anyway, almost home now.

Hope you had a great day.

CHAOS this morning as we received a call from our kid's school saying that the lunch program we occasionally pay for won't be delivered today.

I got the message after I already dropped her off at school as was already at the office.

Thankfully my mom is retired and lives nearby. She'll shuttle a lunch to her school.

Always unnerving getting a call from the school, especially since I'm now 40-50mins away at the office and not 5mins away working from home 🙃
