What tags do I follow for #dyslexia content?
One of the fun parts about being #dyslexic is you make up your own words all the time…
This morning, my brain decided my Yeti mug is now my YEETI mug.
We need a new definition of #dyslexia
The researchers brought together 58 international experts in dyslexia, including academics, specialist teachers, educational psychologists, and individuals with dyslexia, to vote on whether they agreed with several key statements about dyslexia. The statements covered six key sections: the definition of dyslexia, intellectual abilities and dyslexia, the #AetiologyOfDyslexia, co-occurrence with other disorders, the changing impact of dyslexia over a lifespan, and common misconceptions.
42 statements received a consensus of more than 80% and were accepted by the group. They were then used to create the new definition of dyslexia

On Tuesday I had the privilege of speaking at Oxford’s EDI Roundtable on #Neurodiversity. It’s inspiring to see the university breaking down barriers so neurodivergent students and staff feel they belong and thrive. More than 140 attendees joined thought-provoking discussions on policy, experience and inclusion. Fantastic to see this momentum continue! Huge thanks to all involved. And a quick and lazy image I made for work, which anyone is welcome to use if they if they find it useful.

Just trying to create a catch-all post for any other lost dyslexics struggling to find the correct spelling of dyslexic because of their dyslexia preventing them from finding other folks sharing their struggle with dyslexia.
The correct spelling: #dyslexia #dyslexic
Additional suggestions welcome.
Don't mix up #WireShark and #WireGuard: One is for analyzing #networktraffic and the other one is for hiding and encrypting network traffic (besides other things).
And yes, I verbally mix them up often enough even though I know exactly which one does what. Seems to be a #dyslexia thing.
#WritersCoffeeClub How do you format your drafts? Is it the same as the final manuscript?
I write in big fat open dyslexic font. White letters on black background. Which is obviously not the final manuscript, but perhaps I'll format one specifically with dyslexia in mind one day.
if I've got 34/37 of the common traits of dyslexia, am I dyslexic??? (been wondering for years but I've never been tested. I always just write everything off as me being stupid or tired when I experience the symptom's. but I always wonder if it might be that I am dyslexic and just don't know? idk)
Accessibility also means considering color combinations that don’t exclude people who are colorblind or font choices that don’t overwhelm people with dyslexia.
"dyslexia simulators'' spread misinformation.
these "simulators" typically show letters being swapped around within words.
but #dyslexia is not a visual processing disorder. a person reading in Braille will still be dyslexic. a person reading in a language with no alphabet, like Chinese, will still be dyslexic.
people with dyslexia are #neurodivergent.
we don't have "simulators" for other neurodivergencies, like autism or adhd.
#a11y folks, we don't need them for dyslexia either.
Children who struggle in school.
Five common support measures used in educational settings… that may help the children & young people a bit less than intended. In fact, that may even make things worse!

I need to be clear that my #math skills are embarrassingly limited and something I've always struggled with as an #ADD and dyslexic person. Going through school, subject after subject was presented as, "Now memorize this because you have to." Which was not very compelling without the context of what it can really be used for. I tried, I got high marks, but I wasn't included in the better classes with better teachers which created a cycle of disinterest.
As I read, "Dark hero of the information age : in search of Norbert Wiener, the father of cybernetics" which tells the stories of how mathematics, biology, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, and computing were brought together to holistically in the 1940s to examine problems that span subject matter, it makes me want to go back and restart my mathematics journey looking at the contextual challenges those solutions were applied to. I think I could probably overcome many of my limitations by taking a different learning route.
Does anyone have other interesting books on mathematicians or resources that can build up math skills with independent study? Are there corners of the #fediverse that I can look at? I would appreciate recommendations.
I don't ever expect to be very good, but I would like to challenge myself to be more mathematically capable if I take the time to learn more behind the equations themselves.
#Dyslexia and #ADHD share significant genetic links, forming a distinct genetic category separate from other conditions. This suggests overlapping biological path…
Source: PsyPost - Psychology News - “A new study published in Molecular Psychiatry has uncovered genetic connections between dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), offering the strongest evidence yet of shared genetic influences between the two conditions.” #NeuroDivergent #PublicHealth https://search.app/FUGdeDXvok1YQfF88
#WritersCoffeeClub Best writing-related Christmas present someone could give you?
A recording of a couple of chapters of book one read aloud by a professional.
I rely on text to speech stuff because of my #dyslexia but while that has advanced a lot, it's not human, doesn't have the expression it would need and gives me a headache after an hour but I need to hear the rythms and flow of the text to spot where it can be improved.
I might treat myself to this if I find a voice actor I like...
Why do so many refuse to acknowledge the variety and adaptability of the brain?
Everything determined to work differently than this imagined ideal prototype is framed as wrong and incorrect when it's simply different.
Any sign of our brains adapting to the different ways of processing information is said to spell our collective doom.
Why cling to this fictitious prototype brain? Our brains are varied and very adaptable. Isn't that it's strength?
Edit Wasn't Einstein

Thanks. Interesting, but honestly, it's also infuriating.
This is lamenting that humanity might collectively become dyslexic. Such horror!
Reading, as defined by our education system, is one very specific way to process information. That is all it is, and we dyslexics do this differently—not wrongly.
The brain is varied and perpetually changing. It will adapt to how we feed it information. That is nothing new and doesn't doom us.
