The last week running up to any lengthy break from school is filled with staff asking “what are you doing for the break”. Even after 10 years, most are still surprised that I will be working for some of it. “But what do you do when no one is here?” they ask… catch up on all the stuff I can’t do when I’m doing all the forward facing parts of my job. People think books get processed and catalogued magically amongst other things. But I’m one of the lucky ones. Most school library staff are forced to take March break off and are laid off in the summer.

I want to talk about #STEM / #STEAM programs in schools & about the #arts.
My husband is a highschool #drama & english teacher who also runs an extensive after-school #theatre program.
Enrollment in drama & the arts in general is down at his school. Other area schools are reporting the same.
There's a definite pulling away from anything that doesn't seem "career relevant" happening.
But there's more.

Jay Goldberg works for the bogus Canadian Taxpayers Federation which was spawned from Manning/Harper Reform party by 5 right-wing Albertans, including Jason Kenney.
Not hard to guess who funds their opinions. Always raging about Liberal/NDP spending; but pretty much silent on #Conservative spending.
Clamour for the elimination of taxes; but omit how doing so would eliminate essential services.

And the parents who had kids signed up for Science Centre Summer Camp and will now have to scramble for alternative arrangements a week before school lets out.
Lots of disappointed kiddos as well.
#Ontario "Minister of Education", Stephen Lecce, is in London, England "sharing advice to eliminate distractions from cell phones in class and enhance safeguards on AI for children."
He was so chuffed to "have his photo taken in front of Margaret Thatcher's official portrait in the UK Ministry of Education" that he ran through the rain for a brief pose. Looks like his jacket may have shrunk.
"This year, it’s cell phones. Next year, it will be something else. There is always a distraction."
Enrolment in #Ontario's public school system has increased, however..
In 2024-2025, Ontario will have 4,990 FEWER classroom educators. Kindergarten will have to make do with 1,600 fewer staff. Grades 4 to 8 will have almost 1,000 fewer staff. Grades 9 to 12 will lose almost 2,600 positions.

Reminder when you hear Stephen #Lecce boasting about this week's "historic investment" in education..
"This school year, every #Ontario student received $1,357 LESS funding than they would have if the government had kept up with inflation.
This is equal to a $35,000 cut per classroom, and a $2.7 BILLION cut in per-student funding across the province."
Also note we rarely see our Minister of Education in an actual classroom with actual teachers & students.

#WritersCoffeeClub 10: Learn cursive in school?
Yes. I also learned how to use an electronic typewriter (two spaces after every period) and took a latin elective (Grumio est coquus). The fact that I'm lumping these together gives you a sense of how I feel that the Minister of #OntEd has brought cursive writing back into our schools after a couple decades of it not being a thing any more.
I only use it for my signature now. By all means, study it as a part of a history elective.

I called the Minister’s office today and spoke with a very courteous staffer. I told her about the TDSB’s statement, and I told her that I wholeheartedly agree with it.
I noted that the Minister has previously reached out to parents, most notably with a largely anti-union email earlier this month. I asked if the Minister has any plans to issue a similar public statement of his unequivocal support for trans youth in his schools. #onpoli #onted
