Update. "#CDC's #STD Lab Shuttered by #Trump Layoffs"
medpagetoday.com/infectiousdis

"A critical laboratory for surveilling sexually transmitted diseases (#STDs) in the US has been lost in the Trump administration's mass layoffs…One of its most remarkable projects is a one-of-its-kind repository of 50,000 isolates of gonorrhea used to monitor antibiotic resistance, which is quickly becoming a global health concern. The lab has been doing this work for nearly 40 years -- but will now, at best, have a gap in data."

Gringos might not manufacture much to export as they used to, but exporting #bigotry, discrimination, #racism #Christofascists and other #fuckery is basically America at its best. Go USA!

"Trump-style book censorship is spreading – just ask British librarians
UK schools are coming under pressure to remove titles from their shelves. It’s not coming from the place you might think
For all its talk of free speech, the Trump administration seems remarkably comfortable with censorship."

The #Grifters running #Amerikkka are calling public media a grift! Probably because they embrace DEI and aren't afraid to criticize the #Fascist administration! This will not only cripple or destroy #PublicTelevision stations, #CommunityRadio like #WMPG also receives money from the #CPB!!!

White House calls #NPR and #PBS a “grift,” will ask Congress to rescind funding

By Jon Brodkin, April 15, 2025

Excerpt: "In a statement provided to Ars today, PBS CEO Paula Kerger said that 'the effort underway to get Congress to rescind public media funding would disrupt the essential service PBS and local member stations provide to the American people. There's nothing more American than PBS, and our work is only possible because of the bipartisan support we have always received from Congress... Without PBS member stations, Americans will lose unique local programming and emergency services in times of crisis.' "

"I don't expect them to agree with Ta-Nehisi Coates or Kyla Jennee Lacey at 17 years old because I know that Matt Hawn at 17 would not have...But it just plants a seed. So, whenever they get out in the world and they meet people who've experienced some of the same things, they'll have heard that before and be a more active listener"
-Matt Hawn on why he used the materials he did in his contemporary issues class that led to his firing-he was ordered re-hired in court.

Kudos to #Harvard for standing up to the #Trump admin.

Friday, April 11, the Trump admin expanded its list of demands to Harvard. (Note that Harvard made the govt demands public on the Harvard website.)

Today, Harvard President Alan Garber issued a public letter to the university community, explaining the latest Trump demands and the university's 𝙣𝙤 answer. "The University will not negotiate over its independence or its constitutional rights."

Also see Harvard's official answer to the Trump admin, through its lawyers. "Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government. Accordingly, Harvard will not accept the government’s terms as an agreement in principle."

I'm a middle-aged white male. I'll say this about censorship of so-called LGBTQIA+ books:

If you're offended by books about sexuality, perhaps especially other sexualities than what you feel is your own, you're the problem. Sexuality isn't a problem. Trying to limit other peoples' choices is a problem.

This has nothing to do with 'oh, they're older, things were different then' or any other kind of psychobabble to excuse this type of censorship.

This is xenophobia, nothing else; it's about trying to forbid what you've perhaps not experienced or considerably thought through, which is appalling and anti-intellectual.

We should always speak out when people try to limit the rights of others.

“It’s vital that libraries feel able to provide access to a wide range of perspectives if they are to facilitate the free exchange of ideas.”

Exactly. Back our librarians against those attempting to ape the trend in the US to demand censorship. I understood this concept when I was just a child, first using libraries.
