A lovely unnamed creek, meandering through a coastal temperate #rainforest in the Highlands area of #Wsanec territory. Very few old growth left in this forest; mostly 3rd growth & younger with a few 2nd growth trees mixed in. This is a great area to look for mushrooms.

A low-angle perspective of a lush woodland scene dominated by a large, leafless tree heavily covered in vibrant green moss. The moss hangs dramatically from its branches, creating a dense, tentacle-like appearance. Behind this central tree, a dense forest extends toward the horizon, with numerous tall, slender trees also adorned with moss, suggesting a moist environment. A small, dark pond or pool of water is surrounded by ferns. The overall atmosphere is damp, cool, and green, typical of a Pacific Northwest forest. The sky is overcast, providing soft, diffused light.

4 years ago, I first met this gentle giant.
It's one of the only older Western red #cedar #trees left at #W̱MÍYEŦEN #NatureSanctuary. Most of the land had been logged more than once before it was acquired for conservation & rewilding. This is a 2nd growth cedar & it is over 150 yrs old.

The W̱MÍYEŦEN #Nature Sanctuary is a 42 acre protected forest and riparian area that supports biodiversity while preserving ecosystems and wildlife habitat. The tranquil natural environment, inspires an awareness of nature as teacher and essential ally.

I'm a member of this local, biodiverse nature sanctuary. They mainly rely on memberships & public donations. They work with #Indigenous leaders/educators/naturalists from #Wsanec First Nations. The name was changed from the former Mary Lake Sanctuary to W̱MÍYEŦEN Nature Sanctuary to respect that the property is on native lands.

Me, in bright pink cargo pants standing in a damp forest, gently touching the massive trunk of an old-growth tree. Sunlight filters through the canopy, dappling across the bark. I have a colorful backpack, a baseball cap & pearl dangle earrings & holding a walking stick. Green moss grows on the lower part of the tree trunk & its branches. The surrounding forest is thick with other trees & foliage.

On territory.

"I was here." - Beaver

Very clear evidence of #beavers activity. You can see their many chew marks on this stump. This is in a small #Saanich community park, stewarded by citizens who live beside little Calvert Lake.

Access to trails is off of Prospect Lake Rd & easy to miss if you're not paying close attention. Only room for 2 cars to park on roadside pullouts. The trails aren't very well maintained & you can easily get lost around them. I've ended up in someone's backyard once, trying to hike back out. Wear long pants because there's a lot of places you have to bushwhack through along tiny footpaths. Lots of salal, Oregon grape, lady ferns (excellent for fiddleheads harvesting) & mushrooms.

I found this cool, lean-to survival shelter, while out on a day hike around some #Wsanec forests. It was an unexpected find. Not really suited for a really big person - I'm under 5' & had to stoop a bit to walk into it.
