#Maine governor criticizes #Trump administration for freezing funds amid #transgender athlete dispute: ‘It’s not rational’

"Maine #GovernorJanetMills criticized the Trump administration on Monday just days after it moved to cut all federal #education funding to the state. The move came in response to Maine’s refusal to enforce the administration’s directive to ban transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
In an interview on MSNBC’s 'Morning Joe' Monday, Mills said the state received a series of letters from federal agencies, culminating in an April 2 letter from Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, which the Maine governor described as 'appalling' in tone and substance. Mills said the next day Rollins threatened to pull all education funding to the state.

" 'Because there are maybe two — at most — two transgender athletes competing in Maine schools right now, they decided to shut off funding for our school nutrition program, the school lunch program entirely, on which 172,000 Maine school #children rely for their school meals. That didn’t make any sense,' Mills said. "

In high school, I could easily beat the boys at 50 yard dashes and 100 yard dashes (and could dunk way more baskets than most of them -- 7 in a row one time) -- but I was not allowed to compete directly with them, or play on the boys' basketball team. The boys had no problem with it -- but the school did. Some of us are born with subtle differences in chromosomes, hormones, etc., and not-so-subtle differences in weight, skills, etc. Maybe we should focus on muscle mass, weight, etc., like there is with wrestling and other sports. In martial arts class (which I became a brown belt in a class full of boys), we competed by skill and size -- not by gender. Just saying...

"The answers found in historian and journalist #MichaelWaters’s The Other Olympians: #Fascism, #Queerness, and the Making of Modern Sports might be surprising. Waters’s book traces the emergence of #ZdeněkKoubek, a track and field star representing the country formerly known as Czechoslovakia who, at 21, won two medals — a gold in the 800m and a bronze in the long jump — at the 1934 Women’s World Games. (The Women’s World Games was the precursor to women competing at the Olympics). In 1935, Koubek announced that he would be living life as a man and swiftly became an international celebrity.

"Perhaps the most intriguing facet to Koubek’s story was in the public response. Koubek was more welcomed and celebrated than we might imagine. There was an open-mindedness and empathy to the reception of Koubek and his gender identity and expression in the 1930s.

"Waters also pinpoints where and when that changed, specifically at the #1936Olympics in #Nazi Germany. From 2020: #ChrisMosier is the First Openly Trans Man to Compete in Men's Olympic Trials

“For me, it’s all about making a pathway for all the trans athletes that come after me,” he told the New York Times.

"On January 25, Chris Mosier became the first known openly transgender athlete to compete in an Olympic trial as the gender with which they identify. Mosier, a 39-year-old All-American duathlete and Hall of Fame triathlete, made history by starting the race, a 50 Kilometer race walk, held outside San Diego, California.

"Perhaps just as impressive as Mosier’s barrier-breaking identity is the fact that he’s relatively new to the sport in which he’s already broken barriers. The Chicago-born athlete competed in his first race walk this past September, winning a national championship. In his second race a month later, Mosier finished 12th in the nation, thereby qualifying for the Olympic Trials."

AUGUSTA, Maine — "Maine lawmakers are considering an #AntiDoxxing bill that was introduced in an effort to protect minors from adults online.

"#LD537 refers to the term 'doxxing,' which means to share someone's personal information usually with malicious intent.

"The anti-doxxing bill was submitted to the legislature in December 2024 by Democratic Rep. Melanie Sachs of Freeport and other state lawmakers.

"Sachs said this particular bill stems from an incident in 2023 involving a Freeport minor being targeted online by an adult.

"After looking further into that incident, Sachs said she observed Maine did not have the resources to deal with doxxing.

"The proposed bill would prohibit adults from sharing or posting personal identifying information of a minor with the intent to cause fear or harm to the child or their relatives.

"Recently, a #transgender teen from Greely won a state track title. The student-athlete became the center of conversation on #TransgenderPeople in girls' and women's sports in Maine after state Rep. #LaurelLibby made a social media post about it. State House lawmakers voted to censure Libby last week over the post.

"Sachs said LD 537 was already in the works and submitted before the February incident occurred.

"'I put in this bill last year, not to remedy any one situation but to find relief for any situation where an adult doxxes a child,' Sachs said. 'We should not have to legislate #decency, but in this day and age, it is really important for all of us to come together, regardless of what the issue is, to say adults should not doxx children, period.'

"A public hearing on LD 536 was held Monday morning in Augusta."

Doesn't come as a major shock when the head is a conservative Brit.

Not sure what ramifications this will have towards #transathletes but this is looking pretty bad.

As I'm not a big sports nerd, I'm not entirely familiar what sort of pull World Athletics might have, but I feel this is a terrifying precedent of excluding trans women from sports altogether.
