The 5 biggest drivers for extinction are:
* destruction of habitats
* monocultures
* pollution (microplastic, pesticides, heavy metals, forever chemicals, ...)
* climate change
* invasive species

In other words the single biggest driver for extinction is capitalist extractivism and exploitation.
We clear forests to build roads, cultivate monocultures to feed our live stock, burn fossil fuels to power our consumerism and put our waste in the ocean. That destroys the ecosystem, species become extinct or seek refuge somewhere else and become invasive there.

And with "we" I don't mean you or me - I mean the morbidly rich!
I'm not blaming anyone but the 1%. They are the ones that have everything and cause everything.

There are a lot of solutions for this crisis, but we can't realize them without creating a system that prevents morbid abundance.
If the 99% decide to eat less meat, so we don't need so much land for our food - will that really save the rainforests or will it just free up more land for the rich to build more golf courses, factories and AI server farms?

We need to talk about a wealth maximum, an income maximum and an interest maximum. Then we'll realize we don't need endless growth, we don't need exploitation of the 99% and the ecosystem, we won't need 3 full time jobs to 'make a living' and we won't need mindless consumption to numb ourselves in our spare time.

In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I explore the complicated nature of ethical consumerism. Specifically, I unpack what the idea of "there's no ethical consumption under capitalism" really means, and look at how brands have co-opted ethical messaging for corporate gains."

If you have Netflix, you may enjoy the new documentary "buy now", about marketing strategies to get people to buy more stuff (with a big focus on online shopping), and about the waste of all the overproduction of stuff (including e-waste, plastics, clothes, and more).

It has a lot of interesting visuals, from 3D models, to animations, and even a weird glitchy robot-voice song.

I recommend it. 👍

“There is no ethical consumption under capitalism.”

I’ve been thinking more about this. I just saw a commercial advertisement—Christmas-themed—invoking desire in the viewer to purchase goods. I grew up in a culture of purchasing stuff. Having a car was an expected milestone in life.

But the desire for things is a trap. An enticement to perpetuate the overconsumption of resources on our planet (for the gain of others). I’m taking more effort to say “no” to purchasing more things because they’re cool or marginally more useful than things I already have.

This is coming late for me. I’ve had friends who have sworn off buying new. I didn’t see my occasional purchases as being all that much—after all, I could use them for much good. But I financing my own demise. 😔

The U.S. election result has me feeling powerless. But I have a lot of control over what I choose to purchase…or not.
