Buckland Abbey Great Hall, Devon

Sir Richard Grenville transformed the Abbey to a private residence after it was dissolved in 1541. Original terracotta and white tiles, probably imported from Holland, laid in Great Hall built under what was once the church tower. Now owned by the National Trust.

another of the 420 original 1906 Moravian tile mosaics by Henry Chapman Mercer on the Pennsylvania Capitol floor, many featuring PA animals: 374, “Crotalus.” That’s the scientific name for a genus of rattlesnakes, only one of which is native to PA: Crotalus horridus, the Timber Rattlesnake.

For #TilesOnTuesday an glimpse into the lives of ordinary people in the northern Roman Empire: a tile from Weißenburg, that was scratched with the alphabet before firing. It likely served as writing practice; however, the letter sequence is not entirely accurate

Tiles with imprints can be found all across the Roman empire because tiles were laid out to dry in the open air ahead of firing, where animals could step on them.

Ceramic tiles and woodworks in the Oriental garden in Berlin.

Many #Roman tiles with #children's footprints are known from all parts of the empire. But this is a special one, as it can be dated precisely due to the stamp: in 123 AD a #toddler stepped on the tile that laid out to dry before firing.

Found along the Via Appia, now in Museo Nazionale Romano -Terme di Diocleziano

#TilesOnTuesday: a Roman 'fridge', unearthed in 2022 in the legionary fort of Novae, Bulgaria. It's a kind of container made of tiles that was embedded under the floor. It was used by the soldiers to store food. In the container fragments of pottery and animal bones were found.
