What starts out as a bloody and rather silly horror comedy loses its way in the second half as the narrative falls a little flat and it gets a bit samey. A stronger cast might also have helped as star Theo James feels overwhelmed here in dual roles. But the film offers plenty of violent, gore-soaked fun for fans of horror comedies assuming they don't have sky-high expectations.

boxd.itA ★★★★ review of The Monkey (2025)Really enjoyed this. Being a lover of Stephen King’s short stories for almost 40 years (oh my god I’m old) & a big fan of stylish horror with a sense of fun, this was very much my type of thing. Even if I did have to look away for a lot of the (certainly entertaining & inventive) kills since I’m a weirdo horror lover who can’t handle gore. Was nice getting a surprise trailer for Osgood’s next film after the credits. After this & Longlegs, I think I may be a fan. Finally seen enough 2025 U.K. releases to rank them all (here).
