Texas is almost certainly getting school vouchers — Senate Bill 2 has passed in the state’s House and is likely to have a fairly smooth passage to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk. It’s the culmination of a 30-year battle that has until now been blocked by Democrats and rural Republicans.

@TexasObserver takes a look at how it happened. Zeph Capo, the president of the Texas American Federation of Teachers, said in a statement: “Greg Abbott relied on a last ditch phone call from Donald Trump to bully Republican lawmakers to fall in line.”

The Texas Observer · Ending 30 Years of Resistance, Trump and Abbott Break the ‘People’s House’The Legislature’s lower chamber has finally blessed school vouchers—and denied ordinary Texans the chance to weigh in.

Two key pieces of education legislation cleared preliminary hurdles in the Texas House on Thursday, but not before sparking spirited debate among lawmakers, including complaints about a lack of transparency around the process.

Here’s your friendly reminder that #charterschools came about as a white reaction to #desegregation, which tells you all you need to know about the intended beneficiaries of #SchoolVouchers. But if there’s no #departmentofeducation there’s no one to ensure #IDEA and other #civilrights are being enforced in your new for-profit “#schools. Neither will there be a nonprofit group collecting #data to track #educational outcomes for #students attending for-profit schools.

School vouchers sure are good for someone — but it’s not necessarily kids. Here’s @TexasObserver on how in the Lone Star state, the push for school choice could provide a huge payday for private contractors. These certified educational assistance organizations (CEAO) will act as middlemen between the state, parents and private schools — for a fee, of course.

The Texas Observer · How Voucher Vendors Could Make Millions from ‘School Choice’ in TexasThe Legislature’s current proposals put a handful of private contractors in the driver’s seat. Other states have already seen problems.

Dismantling the Department of Education is just the tip of the iceberg. Like all of Trump’s initiatives, his gutting of public education is going to be a huge give away to the ultra-rich. It aligns with a Republican voucher plan to divert $5-10 billion in public funds to private, parochial and homeschooling. It would be funded through a scam in which the ultra-wealthy could “donate” to voucher programs and then get 100% of their money back when they file their taxes—a tax break that would dwarf those given for donating to churches, hospitals, food banks and all other charities. This, in turn, would rapidly increase enrollment in unregulated, for-profit schools, that could teach MAGA-approved curriculum, like the “1776 Report,” while enforcing non-union workplaces. Furthermore, private schools can reject students based on their religion, test scores, and disability, the latter of which also aligns with Trump’s goal of gutting Title I and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Lmaooo: This #charter #school superintendent makes $870k. He leads a district with 1,000 students

"We believe the benefits that Dr. Cavazos brings to Valere through his vast experience and knowledge justify the compensation that the Board has and continues to award him,” the board’s statement read.

...they did not believe the district had run afoul of any #Texas reporting requirements because no one from the state had told them that they had." #schoolVouchers #grift

Here’s a very topical story from the peerless @ProPublica, featuring Jon Husted, who will replace J.D. Vance as Ohio senator. Last May, he participated in a “Prayer at the Statehouse” ceremony organized by the Center for Christian Virtue. Here’s a look at how the influential advocacy group and its network of religious schools are benefiting from the state’s school voucher program.

Such claims have been used as the pretext for a litany of bills & reforms that would further infuse Christianity into public life. During the '23 legislative session, lawmakers passed a law allowing unlicensed chaplains to supplant counselors in public schools; sought to weaken Texas’ constitutional ban on providing taxpayer money to religious institutions, a core plank of the #schoolVouchers movement; and nearly passed a bill requiring the Ten Commandments be posted in public school classrooms.
