Just in case like me you didn't know: You can get single SMD contacts like the one in the picture below on digikey under the "RFI and EMI - Contacts, Fingerstock and Gaskets" category, and on LCSC under the "Industrial control electrical / Antenna spring" category. I've looked for these more than once and haven't found them. Links:

Checking smoke detectors today and replaced the remaining two that took batteries with new 10yr models. Cracked open the old smoke detector (as one does) to check out components it's interesting to see that instead of using actual switches for test/mute buttons, it's just spring steel poised over a wire on the circuit board. Also this has both an optical particle sensor and an ionization (americium-241) detector. The other detector was only ionization.

(Tagging electronics folks, feel free to respond or not as willing/able.)

I'm doing initial research to design a custom battery mgmt/charge/balance circuit for a prototype. 4S/5S LiPo (nonprotected), 90Wh, 12A discharge. It needs to run the device while charging, like a laptop.

Any advice or resources on circuits/architecture/ICs, key safety req's? I'm a professional circuit designer but not experienced w/Li batteries.

Thanks!

So today is not going entirely to plan.
The set of additional #solarpanels I connected up refuse to give us juice. I tried to trace the fault and got jack shit info because my cheap ass 19 year old #multimeter is (confirmed by many tests now) not working any more. Its fuse is fine too, as is its #battery. It just displays zeros.
So add to the list of unexpected expenses and delays one new multimeter...

#mutualaid is our lifeline to #selfsufficiency so we can help others. Can you help us out with our expenses for...?

Multimeter: $7-8 at Harbor Freight
Crimp connectors: $?
Tyres: ~$1200 (Vulpibus)
Refilling fuel: ~$100
Refilling my overdraft: ~$500
Refilling my other overdraft: ~$250

For those following the solar hot water project it got assembled this morning, flushed with water, checked for leaks, emptied, and then pumped full of a glycol/water mix. The motor purrs like a kitten as it circulates the liquid through rooftop collector and heat exchanger at bottom of 120gal storage tank.
The solar controller is checking bottom of the tank and comparing it to collector. When I plugged it in:
top of tank: 120° (heated by electric earlier)
solar collector: 102°
bottom of tank: 57°
In last twenty minutes the bottom of tank has risen to 70° and collector is up to 115°.

Glued and soldered everything together. Now it feels like a real device! I'm super happy! Thanks again to everyone who has helped me to get this far! <3

The CO2 Canary is open hardware, you can find all source files here:

I'm planning to write detailed instructions on how to order the required parts, so that you can get one yourself!

Yep, my mistake: I didn't number the pins of the chip correctly! SDA and SCL are pins 8 + 7, not 5 and 6! Not sure how I got that wrong, but it teaches me to double-check next time!

Luckily, the fuel gauge is the one component that's a bit optional – just nice to have!

Resoldering it on the board seems difficult, as it's so tiny! How would you approach that? I mean, I could try to cut the wrong traces, and solder teeny tiny wires to the chip? #electronics
