The #Bucha massacre in 2022 was one of the most horrific war crimes of the russian invasion of #Ukraine.

The atrocities committed against civilians-executions, torture, and mass graves-shocked the world and became a symbol of the brutality of the war.

It's heartbreaking to remember, but also important to ensure justice and accountability.

Typical cycle of a lie in #Russia

  1. “Bucha was a Western fake”
  2. “Bucha we can repeat”

These t-shirts are openly sold in online shop in Russia. In a very nuanced sense of humor typical for the sophisticated Russian culture it presents a slaughtered pig with a text “РеZня в Буче. Можем поVторить!” which means “Slaughter in #Bucha, we can repeat”, with Latin letters for V and Z to celebrate the Russian military markings.

Since yesterday #Russia channels have been spinning the story about “civilian bodies found in basement in Kursk oblast after liberation”. The videos have been posted by RIA and circulating on Western pro-Russian channels as well - here’s one Twitter thread if you want to see the videos. Of course, if the video is authentic Russia should conduct a joint investigation with #Ukraine, just as it demanded after #Bucha murders. Carefully watching the videos however indicates a number of discrepancies between what was filmed and what narrative has been put on top of it.

  • The video has no details that would allow geolocation, but let’s assume it’s indeed shot in Russkoe Porechnoye.
  • The village was never controlled by ZSU. Since August 2024 both sides were likely trying to capture it but it remained in active combat zone.
  • Bodies of civilians in the main cellar room lie among linen and mattresses, so it’s likely they were hiding there from artillery or fighting on the surface.
  • Bodies “with tied hands” lie in a separate room and aren’t tied the Katyń execution style (tied with with wire behind their backs), but have their jacket sleeves tied in front and faces covered with hats. That’s likely how civilians would secure bodies of people who died earlier of any cause.
  • All that, assuming videos are authentic, suggests these could be civilian casualties who were hiding in the cellar during ongoing fighting for the village who either died of cold or, an even more grim possibility, from a grenade thrown down the cellar by one of the armies trying to capture the village. But nothing even remotely resembles a systematic execution in the style Russian army did in Ukraine in 2022.

In the thread linked above you can also find other “evidence of Ukrainian atrocities”:

  • A civilian car shot in Korenevo, except Korenevo was also never controlled by ZSU. Quite the opposite, Russian police in November took videos of private flats looted by Russian army who stationed there.
  • The video with bodies thrown into a sand pit is especially cynical manipulation, because it was first posted in April 2022 and shows civilians killed by Russian army in Motyzhyn Kyiv oblast’.

After Russian forces were beat back from the north of #Ukraine in the spring of 2022, evidence of summary executions, torture, and systematic looting during the weeks of occupation came to light, shocking the world. Two years later, Bucha is slowly healing but the thousands of nameless graves of civilians will forever haunt its community.

What is and has been happening in the occupied towns of Ukraine?

#Netherlands MEP Marcel de Graaff office was just searched by police in relation to links of one of his employees with #Russia disinformation campaigns. Shortly after de Graaff posted a statement on Twitter claiming the following:

By the way, I have no involvement whatsoever in any so-called Russian disinformation operation. I have my own political beliefs and I proclaim them. That is my job as a MEP.

To which Bellingcat’s Elliot Higgins promptly recalled how in April 2022 de Graaff publicly laughed off their investigation into #Bucha massacres.

In #Ukraine, #Vovchansk is a city located in the #Kharkiv Oblast, close to the Russian border.

At one point almost 18,000 people, about half the population of #Bucha, used to call this beautiful city home and it was filled with life just few weeks ago.

But now it stands as yet another example of the meaning of "Russkiy Mir" and the horror and suffering it brings.

#Russia lieutnant Azatbek Omurbekov (Азатбек Омурбеков) was one of the tank commanders proudly presented on the Moscow 9 May victory parade. Omurbekov is mostly known for his role in the mass-scale execution of #Ukraine civilians in #Bucha - he was the commander who issued the orders to “kill any civilians with smartphones”. In recognition of his heroism, Omurbekov was granted Hero of Russia medal.
