In order to improve my fresh #pixelart skills I'm going to try my hand at #hartoween
https://social.horrorhub.club/@stina_marie/113220760493893634
Can't promise I'll be able to do everything on the day its due, and that I'll have the energy to keep up with it throughout the month, but it's worth a try at least.
Personal rules: 128x128px (but exported at 200%), trying to stick to the ENDESGA64 palette as much as I can.
So, here's day 1: Pumpkin
Needed some non-coding time to think about how to approach something, so used that time to take care of today's #hARToween while brainstorming on how to approach the work thing.
Thus here's day 2: Spooky House
I actually already drew tomorrow's #hARToween image tonight because I don't know how much time I'll have for it tomorrow, with #mrmcd2024 starting.
So here's a somewhat early day 3: Ghost
This was not the original plan, but one thing led to another and I just ran with it. Turned out way cuter than I thought I could pull off
I can't draw at all with a mouse btw... No chance at all. But I recently got myself a 11.6" drawing tablet and that's unlocked so much for me
Today's #hARToween image is admittedly a rush job as I'm currently at #mrmcd2024 and thus can't focus as well on drawing as on the first three days.
But I took the graphic tablet with me and tried my best to paint Granny Weatherwax in under 30min.
Day 4: Witch.
Now that I'm feeling better, let's try to get back on top of #hARToween.
I'll try to also catch up on what I missed, but if I don't have the time for more than one drawing per day, I'll focus on the current one.
Today I (so far) did two.
First one is today's, Day 11: From the Depths.
The seconds on is the first one I missed, Day 5: Haunted Doll.
I'm quite happy with today's #hARToween drawing... Day 12: Full Moon (first). Awooooo! I think working with minimal lining here and just letting everything be backlit worked great!
I'm not that happy with the second one I did for the (missed) Day 6: Closet Monster (second). I like my idea, but I couldn't figure out how to add some details and shading without things looking weird. Ah well. I'm learning :)
Some more #hARToween drawings...
First of all, today's, Day 13: Mask.
I'm not very happy with that one, didn't help that this was my third try either I guess. At least experimented a bit with lightning, and glowing eyes.
And the second one, Day 7: Bloody Mary.
With that one I'm quite ok, especially happy with the light effects and the lime. And yes, from the get go I planned to draw the cocktail vs. something creepy, sorry
#hARToween Day 14: Bats
I tried my hand a bit more on dithering (manually, with custom brushes, apart from the gradient in the back), and I might have overdone it a bit maybe, but tbh I kinda like it...
#hARToween Day 15: Death Wreath
I gotta admit, not my favourite prompt so far, struggled really to be creative with it as it shows IMHO.
But at least I could practice a bit to draw plant stuff. And thankfully I managed to not have it look like a christmas wreath, or at least I hope
#hARToween Day 16: Black Cat
I think that's the first time I've ever drawn a cat that actually looks like one and not just like a weird dog Though admittedly, this one looks like it has a black panther somewhere in its family tree
#hARToween Day 17: Spiderweb
I feel a cold coming up, so I'm kinda happy that today it was an easy prompt. More geometry than anything else Decided against a spider in the web, because aaaaah!
#hARToween Day 22: Vintage Vibes
Thanks to some health issues I still have to do days 18-21 and also 8-10, but those will follow when they follow.
Meanwhile, today's prompt made me think of a 102 year old movie I have yet to see, but which I think definitely has vintage vibes. So here's my attempt at turning one of the most well known scenes of Nosferatu into a pixel art drawing - a scene that really scared me as a child I should add. It was kinda therapeutic to draw
#hARToween Day 18: Skull/Bones (backlog)
I thought about a skull, but in the end decided a Jolly Roger would be more interesting. Especially since I thought about a candle on top of a skull for October 19's prompt "Creepy Candle". We'll see.
#hARToween Day 23: Trick Or Treat
We are returning to the place of Day 3 here, but this time there's not a child dressed up as a ghost trying to get some candy but... someone else Who says that only human children enjoy going trick-or-treating?
#hARToween Day 24: Nightmare
Yikes, I think that was so far the longest work First thought was a pixelart version of "The Nightmare" by Henry Fuseli, but that didn't work with the aspect ratio. So I decided to try a more modern version. Not happy with the background, feels not detailed enough, but I think I at least managed to rescue it a bit with adding the bookshelf and lamp.
#hARToween Day 25: Headless
I was SO tempted to just draw a terminal with an SSH shell opened (headless server) but then I figured I'd rather try my hand at an homage to the movie poster of Sleepy Hollow, because that's frankly the actual thing that comes to my mind when I hear the word "headless" in a non-admin context.
Three colors only this time. And I have to say, I surprised myself with that one, I did NOT expect that I'd be happy with this one, but I am very much!
#hARToween Day 26: Horror Movie
I decided to go with one my favourite horror movies here, which I sadly so far never saw in the cinema.
The palette is really working against me in these darker settings, would love to have some darker colors as well
*edit* in a video call at the same time, forgot the alt text
#hARToween Day 8: Stormy Night (backlog)
I decided to go with a thunderstorm at night seen through a window... First time I tried my hand at lightning, actually kinda happy with how that turned out.
No timelapse for these catch-up ones now as that's saving on time while working through the backlog
#hARToween Day 9: Sinister Shadow (backlog)
I thought long and hard about this, but frankly this was the best I could come up with that I felt like I could pull it off
Once more, no timelapse, trying to get through the backlog here.
Got halfway through Day 10: Devil/Demon but then couldn't make up my mind of what to do with the rest of the scene, so that will have to wait until the morning. But at least 3.5 done in one sitting, nice work on the backlog ^^ Good night!
#hARToween Day 10: Devil/Demon (backlog)
Not happy with the ground, but couldn't figure out how to add details without making it look extremely weird.
Perfection is the enemy of done, so here we go.
#hARToween Day 27: Seance
I think I overdid it yesterday, drawing almost 4 of these, and this is why this one looks quite boring
And I also managed to forget starting the timelapse
#hARToween Day 28: Cryptid Creature
And of course, I chose Nessie That was probably the first cryptid creature I ever heard the stories about, so obviously it has a special place in my heart.
#hARToween Day 29: Scary Story
Kinda exhausted from the day and just waiting for dinner to show up, so the original idea of having some kids sit around a fire with one holding a flashlight to their face got reduced to just the flashlight to the face
#hARToween Day 30: Graveyard
Wanted to do this not already completely exhausted from work, so an early post...
I figured, an old graveyard on a hill with a look out to sea would be something nice that's not the usual "spooky graveyard at night, possibly with zombies and vampires" that immediately came to my mind when I first saw the prompt.
#hARToween Day 31: Free Draw!
Today allows me to choose my own prompt, so I went with "Spooky Castle" because that sounded like a fun thing to draw.
And here it is. You may decide yourself on whether there's a vampire living there or a crazy scientist. In any case, I tried my hand at some fog and I think that worked well ^^
I still have to do Day 20 (Dark Garden) and Day 21 (Spooky Swamp) from the backlog, so this is not the last post of these
Happy Halloween!
#hARToween Day 20: Dark Garden (backlog)
I really wanted to finish the full challenge in October still, so here's the result of my lunch break....
#hARToween Day 21: Spooky Swamp (backlog)
... and here's the result of my after hours drawing session ;)
And with that, I've done it! 31 #pixelart drawings in October! Phew!
I still had one #hARToween related thing I wanted to do - creating a wallpaper/grid of all the #pixelart drawings I did for that challenge in October. That's now also done!
Looking at all of them together I'm really proud of myself that I managed to do all of those. Definitely learned a lot that will help me with #gamedev related drawings in the future - and it also was a lot of fun
When I started this journey, I thought I couldn't draw. This gave me courage to try
@foosel I'm so glad you did!
