Someone mentioned the modeling “cat walk.” I was curious if this is misogynistic/patriarchal in nature. A little etymology research revealed nothing.

I did, however, find out that until the 50s “runway” was used exclusively. Apparently cat walk was adopted as an analogy of a cat’s grace/poise.

Modeling in general exacerbates the objectification of women. But I’m curious about this specific term.

What do y’all think about this term?

@markwyner
I think sometimes too much thought is put into things like this. Has a woman ever been offended by being compared to a cat? 🤔

@jacklaridian@horrorhub.club perhaps this is because you’re he/him. Same as me.

I believe we have a responsibility to consider the experiences of people of other identities. I would call that empathy, not overthought.

Aside from that, there are indeed related variables: cat fight, vagina slang, cat calling, etc.

I’m not saying this is an issue. I’m asking the question as a man who wants to be respectful with my language.

@markwyner
As soon as a woman weighs in and says she's offended by being compared to a cat in this way, I think there are better ways to spend your energy.

Also, the term 'cat called' comes from the male stereotype of men being like 'Tom Cats' meaning they have loose morals.

@jacklaridian I’ll spend my energy how I like, thanks. If this is of no interest to you, you’re welcome to ignore the poll and move on with your day.

Yeah, that's cool. It's a public forum, so I'll just add my two cents and move on. Stop making up feminist issues. There are plenty of real ones to be concerned with.
