I really dig the way Thomas Nagel framed the idea of consciousness:

Consciousness exists in an object/organism/system only if “there is something that it is like to be” that object/organism/system. In other words, the subjective character of experience.

“No matter how the form may vary, the fact that an organism has conscious experience at all means, basically, that there is something it is like to be that organism.” – Thomas Nagel

Pretty Gnostic Machine

“even with the entire physical database at one's fingertips, humans would not be able to fully perceive or understand a bat's sonar system, namely what it is like to perceive something with a bat's sonar.” Martine Nida-Rümelin

But what about an ant? An amoeba? How about a rock? What about an atom?

Or, going down the scale of being further, do you think that “there is something that it is like to be” a quark?
