I really dig the way Thomas Nagel framed the idea of consciousness:
Consciousness exists in an object/organism/system only if “there is something that it is like to be” that object/organism/system. In other words, the subjective character of experience.

But what about an ant? An amoeba? How about a rock? What about an atom?
Or, going down the scale of being further, do you think that “there is something that it is like to be” a quark?
