As we lead up to the holiday season, here’s one of our older videos, about the history and etymology of “Yule” and other winter festivals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thKqObFOw08

If you have written about #grief or #sadness , I’d like to #read it or #listen to it. I’m not #sad. But I’m really feeling sad stuff for some reason. Maybe I’m just prepping. Anyway, feel free to share your sad #words and #music. I’d love it today.
Here’s our contribution. Thanks so much. (PS: I have #apple #bandcamp and #soundcloud, thanks)

Baby name consultant Colleen Slagen told TODAY that expectant parents these days are looking for "Ivy League names" that give off "an air of polish" when choosing their child's moniker. She lists names like Callaway and Brooks for boys, and Palmer and Georgina for girls, as being timeless, classic and unique. "I think at their core, they are wanting success for their child, and they are perhaps hoping to manifest that through a name that evokes sophistication," she says. If you've been responsible for naming children, what were the things you kept in mind? Choose as many as you like!
@davidnjoku LOL It's crazy, isn't it? When you think of it, though, there's a bunch of concepts like that. Take car parts for example, where the back compartment of a car is called a "boot" in the UK and here in the US it's a "trunk," and the part that covers the engine is a "bonnet" in the UK and a "hood" in the US.

What are some #words in your #NativeLanguage that you hear just often enough to recognize, but not often enough to know exactly what it means?
For me, one is soliloquy. I can usually guess that it has something to do with one person speaking extensively, like a monologue, but I always second guess because why not just say "monologue"? I assume it's not exactly synonymous but I'm never confident & always look it up lol.
#Words alone do not cut the mustard. This is why #silence is so important a dimension to #spiritualexperience (the via negativa). And also #art (the via creativa, including #ArtAsMeditation). https://bit.ly/4ggZvwb
So Macquarie chose @pluralistic #enshittification as their word of the year last week and now Oxford chose "brain rot."
I can't help but feel there are two very different perspectives at play here: while "enshittification" correctly points the finger at the source (i.e. the services that are shittified), "brain rot" places the blame solely on the consumer, who "overconsumes material considered to be trivial or unchallenging" that just seems to somehow magically appear on their feeds.
@w7voa
#words
should mean something, calling that an #apology is using that term very loosely.
we need to demand that our media present the news with more accuracy and clarity.
Lets talk about what a real apology should contain. Then lets talk about how the damage can be undone and what can be done to prevent more incidents like this.
#democracy is more than how we vote!
"Capping off a year that proved, without a shadow of a doubt, that non-A.V. Club readers are spending too much time ingesting the worst shit imaginable online, the Oxford University Press has named “brain rot” Word of the Year."

@EUCommission I'd love to see those #words be actually be taken by heart and turned into #laws and #actions instead of #marketing #bzttwords!
