We also need software developers, systems engineers, and IT engineers that take pride in using the slowest hardware that could possibly solve the problem — i.e. hardware that already exists.

We need waste — including premature "web scale" — to be frowned upon as bad engineering, and to stop drinking the "developer time trumps everything" kool-aid. Because it's mostly a lie, and has real environmental costs. 🍃🔥

We're fast approaching an e-waste catastrophe: Windows 10's end-of-life this October.

Almost 4 years since Windows 11 came out, I still don't understand why it needs TPM 2.0, except to force a massive hardware upgrade cycle.

Clearly we need some sort of uprising against this. We need people to have pride in extending the useful life of their hardware and give the finger to unwanted (and privacy-invading) AI features meant to boost sales.

Personal computing needs have stagnated in the last decade. Most people don't need to chase the latest hardware, nor would they even notice the difference.

Most mid-range laptops sold today could easily last for the next 15 years. The treadmill is the software, and all because these giant companies need continuous feeding to remain giants.

Software needs are stagnant too, especially at the OS level, but developers are incentivized to be wasteful.

I decomissioned this laptop because Apple dropped it starting with macOS Ventura (13.x), not because it felt slow or constrained.

It got replaced as my personal laptop by my previous work machine, a 16-inch Intel MacBook from 2019. TBF, it's overpowered for the stuff I do off work, but I'll be surprised if the next macOS maintains support for any Intel-based hardware, so it too has its days numbered.

This waste annoys me.

Interesting slice of life piece here, but also a bit more. Korea has a serious attitude toward food waste (homes in my area are required to pay for specific bags to dispose of excess food and table scraps.) So photos of all these nearly full plates of uneaten bread are a shock to the conscience for many
