Fewer books than 2023 (8 vs 14) and pages (3,535 vs 5,005), mostly because I now run-commute to work and I can't read at night anymore (newborn and all). Some great books though, and a bunch started and not finished (yet), not shown.

Okay all, the group #AOTY list is up! I've boosted the toot version from @1001otheralbums.com, but footnotes look like crap on here, so it might look better on the blog. Thanks everyone for taking part, there's some great stuff on here to check out - 132 albums, to be exact!

Happy listening! And remember, keep your friends close and your records closer. :ablobjam:

Albums the Fediverse Loved in 2024

Okay all, here are 132 albums the Fediverse loved in 2024, mostly 2024 releases but also some earlier gems! Thanks so much to the 60 Fedizens who shared the albums that rocked their world – it’s nice to see some familiar faces from the 1001 Other Albums project, and some new ones! And, as always, it’s so lovely to get a glimpse into all our diverse tastes in music, and to see people trying something new solely based on a random Fedi recommendation.

Genre tags are included as tasting notes and each title is linked to its Bandcamp or Songlink (with the exception of 2 physical-only releases), so click and listen away – perhaps you’ll find a new-to-you album that gets you through 2025! Check out the footnotes to see who submitted each album, along with any extra comments they included (warning: some comments include MOAR ALBUMS).

Happy listening, and remember to keep your music close by this year, in case of emergencies. And, if you need more recommendations, you know where to find me.

I left Spotify in 2021 and started listening to my own music collection. I already had the MP3s and/or the CDs from which to rip them, so I hosted them on my Plex server and started listening to them using the excellent Plexamp mobile client.

One thing I missed from Spotify was the "wrapped" listening summary... but I'd always believed I could improve on what Spotify delivered. This winter break I spent some time implementing a solution in Microsoft Fabric. I used data from my Plex server's SQLite database for recent years, and from the JSON files that Spotify will send you if you make a GDPR data request for older years. I standardized enriched both data sets with the open source MusicBrainz database, and then visualized some Spotify-inspired vanity metrics in Power BI.

Hockey was a common theme for me this year, and we got all kinds of head coach drama for both the NAHL and PWHL. I'm glad for all the precious "firsts" to be done in PWHL, and we can just enjoy the top-tier #hockey

I took some time today to look back through my calendar and my journal. Boy, it sure was a tough year, and that’s not in reference to anything you can read about in the headlines…

Instead of going through all that, I’ll list a few things that were highlights of the year for me:
– After years of dragging my feet, I started learning flash photography. I’m really enjoying the new challenge. I also have ideas for things I want to try in 2025.
– I enjoyed several buddy reads of fiction books that I probably would’ve never read on my own.
– I did a few things way outside my comfort zone. Way. Pretty much relatively harmless things, but being outside my comfort zone was the point.

I don’t think I anticipated any of these particular good things happening at the beginning of this year. I had hoped that 2024 would turn out better than 2023 did, but it didn’t really. And looking into 2025, all I can really see is difficulties continuing. But, hopefully, I’ll have some unexpected good things to share with you next year too.
