We’ve been talking for a while about creating a #WritingHorrors series, similar to #WritingWonders / #WordWeavers / #WritersCoffeeClub, but for #writers of #horror, #DarkFantasy, or who just want to enhance their #writing with #dwrk elements in general.

This will be a series of short questions with a few longer #WritingPrompts mixed in, intended to help improve yourself as a #writer, and to improve whatever #story you’re working on.

(Continued in thread)

#WritingWonders: What is your MCs first memory?

Marissa has always loved cats and her first memory would definitely be doing something with the family cat.

Caylor’s (ghost) involves realizing quite young that he’s a disappointment to his father.

I have no idea for Dante, my werewolf.

Also, decided to reveal this WIP’s title, so here goes:

27.10.2023 Do you ever mention writing or reading in your stories?

I haven't so far still books exist in a way in my SciFi Story. I mentioned prior that I plan a parody with all the thrown out ideas for what I write/wrote about in wordweavers, writingwonders and pennedpossibilities, this will be a minor story element for the history of one of my MCs and known as a extremely trashy take on exploring space.
Also if your a AO3 author... 😬

#WritersCoffeeClub Ch 2 Nbr 16 — How do you feel about flashbacks? Do you use them? /Guess./

I was looking through my October Pages file where I keep all the writing prompts I've answered, amazed at my current output. 16,000 words so far this month. Then I thought back to November of last year...

I'd spent almost a month noodgying my open source Linuxy friend in /Missourah/ about creating an online presence. He had been talking about this thing called "Masto... Don? For all I knew, it had tusks. Actually, he had been noodgying me, so... finally... I said, "Let's do this."

He talked about "instances" and things that went swoosh over my head, but I tried. Every time I picked one sounding creative or authorial, I got, /Sorry, we're not accepting new accounts now./ Eventually, he invited me to his favorite instance. With a name like "Eldritch" and lots of French speakers, it sounded fun and appropriate for an SF writer. I still got all sorts of confused, but people saw I was a newbie and were helpful, and that was nice. I quickly learned about following people, using hashtags people followed, and followed those hashtags. I started telling about my life as a (somewhat autistic) writer, and what it felt like to burn out and come back.

Eventually, I stumbled into hashtags like #WritingWonders and #RomanceWonders, then new ones like #PennedPossibilities and #WritersCoffeeClub, not to mention #Writever which is costing me on average two hours a day, attempting to write new 800 word stories—31 of them.

Today, I can barely remember my life without Mastodon. I've learned so much, felt so supported, and gotten my short writing so together. I don't wanna ever go back.

"John Hartley is a talented musician who has written and recorded over 200 songs. He has now parlayed his songwriting skills into the gritty realism and rites of passage portrayed in his pacy debut novel. 'The Broken Bottle' is the first volume of a proposed series of books for teenagers and young adults. I strongly recommend this rewarding read." Merric Davidson, Editor, Toppermost.co.uk

“Well that was good. So good I’m going to read it again now I know what happens.” Rob Morgan, A Goldfish Called Regret

“John’s detailed descriptions make it easy to get transported into the story. Great writing.” Esther Ybarrondo

#WritingWonders: How does your MC handle strong emotions?

Bleu: fine to a point, but then gets a bit impulsive or anxious.

Atsushi is pretty laid back except sometimes he’s anxious.

Rana: Quite developed at managing her emotions, though not quite as advanced as she’d like to be. (Star beings strive for Crowning, sort of like their enlightenment).

Savas: Much better than you would think, because he deals with a lot of secrets, but he’s losing it in my current book.

#PennedPossibilities 85 — MC POV: Tell us a quick love story. The story must end badly. CW: Um, frank talk?

I thought he was dead. The only guy who'd ever had a crush on me. My lieutenant from my days in the mob. He'd been bleeding when I'd shoved him through the /Interstellar/ apparition a year ago. When I'd escaped through the same working ten minutes later, the street it was anchored to in Home City was abandoned—but for Praetorian guards too frantic to notice me because Director Rainy Days had roared through only half a minute before, in full battle mode, without any of her guards.

A year later, Rainy Days cornered me. To convince me to stay, she'd baited her trap with him. She'd made him a cadet in her Praetorian guard, and oh my—my—my, did he look good in that uniform. He stepped up to me, no longer blushing or stuttering, not able to say those words that he liked me. No, he stepped up to be, cupped my chin, and kissed me deeply.

My knees nearly gave out, despite my worst enemy standing less than a dozen standards away from me. My heart racing, I returned the kiss, warming up, and letting him put a hand behind my back.

Rainy Days said something like, "She should get a room."

I stepped back, a hand on my lieutenant's chest. I looked at her in complete shock, but I couldn't think of anything sufficiently sarcastic. I flashed her a hand-gesture instead, then grabbed his head and kissed him back until he moaned. I expected that evening would be sweet.

He fought alongside me against Rainy Days, the strongest thaumaturge to ever live. We nearly died.

That night, after lots of events too numerous to enumerate, and me agreeing to work with Rainy Days as her minion (long story), I had to deal with my roommate. She was the first person I'd acknowledged as a friend since childhood. I had used her in a sting operation to catch a crime boss and for various reasons—including that she had never ever gotten laid because of who her mom is—was bummed out.

I "gave" her my boyfriend to cheer her up.

They took me literally. Loudly, I might add. You'd think an ivory tower would have better sound insulation, but you'd be wrong. I left as soon as I could the morning after as they were still at it.
