Penaflor<a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/Watching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Watching</a> MALUMUnnecessary <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/remake" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#remake</a> of 2014's The Last Shift from the same filmmaker. I don't remember enough about the original to compare or contrast, but since I'll probably forget about Malum 20 seconds after I post this review I don't need to. Every five minutes there's a cheap jump <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/scare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#scare</a> or fake out but nothing that builds tension or keeps you unsettled. If you like gore, there are some effective shots of it but that also underlines how much you've been sleepwalking through anything else that doesn't involve a severed head or random entrails. All the jump scares reminded me of last year's laughably mediocre Smile, but at least Malum doesn't feel like its on autopilot. You know if you're the audience for this. DirtyOldTownMALUM is a *legit banger.* Anthony DiBlasi remakes his own 2014 feature LAST SHIFT with a bigger budget and a broader scope. My kid called it the scariest movie they've ever seen. (And they watch nearly as much horror as I do.) I don't know about that, but it was very good. Jessica's story isn't that deep, but the hole she's in absolutely is and you're in it with her. DiBlasi is a virtuoso at horror scenes and you feel the tension and dread and fear Jessica is going through.This also has some of the best use of directional audio I have ever heard. DirtyOldTownAnyone have strong feelings about Last Shift (2014)? We're going to see the pseudo-remake Malum tonight.
