Strypey<p>I like Jeremy Renner's take on the character of Clint Barton, and the way he's been written for the MCU. Rewatching the Hawkeye series with a young family member, I notice that the way it's written really makes the most of the series format. ScotsBear 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿<p>So I didn't see the Agatha reveal coming last week and I <i>really</i><span> should have, being a life-long Marvel reader. Ehh what can I say - I'm an X-Men guy first and foremost.<br><br>Billy Maximoff/Kaplan is here, following a VERY Marvel source-material trajectory towards a pretty accurate representation. And that got me thinking (finally!) about some other moves Marvel have been making, and a possible future.<br><br>In the absence/dissolution of the original big-boy-pants Avengers they've been slowly introducing us to the cast of the Young Avengers. We've had Girl Hawkeye, Billy and Tommy Maximoff. Miss America in the last Strange movie. Probably Ms Marvel will be shoe-horned in there as well...<br><br>...but I'm thinking about Wanda Maximoff going a bit, well, </span><i>evil</i> (as many emotionally overwrought women in fiction tended to do in the hands of male writers). And I'm thinking about the sudden course-correction towards Dr Doom rather than, let's face it, a bizarrely experimental (and in RL problematic AF) Kang. And I'm thinking <b>The Children's Crusade</b>...a Young Avengers tale featuring Billy (Wiccan) and Tommy (er, Speed) hunting for their missing mother, which ends with a fairly froth-spittle Doom spouting off about how HE corrupted Wanda Maximoff in the comic 616 universe to do that awful, terrible "No More Mutants" chaos spell she did, that for a number of years magically reduced a population of millions of mutants down to a couple of hundred <i>supposedly</i> in her awful burning grief over losing the children she magically created but maybe actually it was Doom All Along because he hates hates <i>hates</i><span> those pesky mutants...<br><br>Any of this sounding familiar, MCU viewers?<br><br>The pieces are falling into place to tell The Children's Crusade in the MCU. The next series in the Wanda trilogy centers on Vision and I'll lay odds that also introduces us to Iron Lad (another Young Avenger). <br><br>Can Patriot and Hulkling be far behind? Matt<p><span>S1E5 -<br><br>A bit of a shorter show than we generally see with the Disney+ entries, and it's not hard to see why.<br><br>Marvel Studios has set out to create a perfectly stand-alone entry into the MCU's ever-growing repertoire and for better or worse they've done just that.<br><br>Providing very little of substance really undercuts a lot of the best parts of this show. It's hard not to love the inherent charm of its cultural representation but easy to raise an eyebrow at the "spotlight" branding. I adored seeing Vincent D'Onofrio return as Kingpin but spent most of the runtime wondering exactly what was being achieved.
