A favourite film a day for 365 days: The Mission.

Quirky, unpredictable film about a disparate group of gunmen hired to protect a triad leader. It's not so much the plot as the characters and the staging that's so engaging, with as much attention given to the five kicking a scrap of paper around while waiting for their boss, to long, wordless shoot-outs in deserted Hong Kong streets.

A favourite film a day for 365 days: The Killer (1989).

Exploding Madonnas, doves fluttering in slow motion, about a million bullets fired. A hitman takes on one last assignment (yes, I know) to earn the money to pay for an operation to save the sight of a singer he accidentally blinded. In amongst the spectacular gun battles that dot the film like sequins is a genuinely touching story about friendship and honour.

A favourite film a day for 365 days: Year of the Dragon.

More moral conflict. The hero isn't particularly nice, while the villain is well-spoken, charming and utterly ruthless. Scorching, savage tale of the New York drug war in the 80s, with dialogue scenes as intense the gunfights.

A favourite film a day for 365 days LA Confidential.

I love this for the way it takes its time setting all the characters up, and only then introduces the murders that send the plot off in a totally new direction and sets all the moral compasses spinning. Fabulous piece of storytelling.

A favourite film a day for 365 days: Elite Squad (1 & 2).

Can't really talk about one without the other, since they're pretty much one story. Savage - not to mention bleak - look at corruption and gang/drug wars in the favelas of Rio. (Although I have a friend from Brazil who says it would be nice if we didn't automatically think of favelas/drugs/gangs every time we heard the name of her country.)

A favourite film a day for 365 days: The Lady in Red.

A standard Roger Corman drive-in quickie contains all his requisite action and nudity, except.... John Sayles' script about a Depression-era woman forced by poverty and bad luck into a life of crime has a fierce left-wing bent and places the emphasis on her resourcefulness and ingenuity. Whatever the poster might suggest, it's definitely *her* film.

A favourite film a day for 365 days: Dillinger.

Gangster movies. The Johnny Depp film 'Public Enemies' might have stuck more closely to the facts, but this 1974 version beats it all the way. Great performances, blistering action scenes and a real feel for the times and a legend in the making.
