Because the movies have become so famous for this stylistic device, you might think that #SergioLeone came up with the extreme close-ups of the duelist’s eyes, but hey, #SamuelFuller’s hard-boiled 1957 western #FortyGuns has them too. The cut from extreme close-up to long shot was and is pretty daring, but that is Fuller’s entire body of work. This particular scene is one of my favorites of all western scenes. Clark Gable and Barbara Stanwyck in a 1950 auto racing movie with the corny title of “To Please a Lady” didn’t sound extremely promising. But the leads are great together and the racing scenes are well done, so it was far more entertaining than I anticipated.
