The Christine Keeler Story

54. The End of the Affair - Version #2

Regarding the end of their thirty-two day affair, Christine Keeler’s version differed to John Profumo’s. According to Christine’s memoirs published in the News of the World, the affair ended when John Profumo demanded that she should stop living with Stephen Ward, and she refused.

Grete Wiltschka, 22, from Vienna has offered to give Ray Charles her left eye. When Ray Charles heard of the offer, he said, “Her sacrifice would be too much for any man to ask. Life is still life, whether one is able to see people or not. Eyesight doesn’t bother me much.”

Paul Temple appeared in many formats: novels, comic strips, radio plays, films and a television series. Steve, Paul Temple’s wife, was played by a variety of actresses, but for facial similarity I think this strip drawn by John McNamara in December 1962 and Ros Drinkwater in the television series in 1970 come closest.

Easy Rider (Music From The Soundtrack)
1969 Canada pressing

I never understood the big deal with Easy Rider as a movie.
I guess WOULDNT, as I was born in ‘77, & not of the age to feel whatever impact it had in real time.
Pretty uninteresting & not for me.

The soundtrack however, is great.
Hendrix, Electric Prunes, The Byrds, Steppenwolf…
Some killer tunes on here.

I’ve had some intense conversations with people about that whole hippie generation, including with hippies themselves.
I know this is a strong opinion, but as a generation, they were failures.
They had the chance to do something amazing, but instead, did a bunch of drugs, & grew up to be the greed-ridden coke-fueled cogs of the 80s.

The “revolutionaries” all settled into comfortable California lifestyles, making boring music, & became the targets of the next revolutionaries.

Trace “Somebody To Love” to “We Built This City”.

I rest my case.

53. The End of the Affair - Version #1

It’s possible that a warning from civil servant Sir Norman Brook prompted John Profumo to end his thirty-two-day affair with Christine Keeler.

In August 1961 Profumo wrote the following to Christine, words that later gained great notoriety.

Sunday 12 May 1963

One of the world’s loveliest women, the Duchess of Argyll, is to tell her story to the Sunday Mirror. As soon as the Argyll divorce case is disposed of, she will reveal all. What is she really like? She is twice married, has a magnolia complexion, green eyes, chestnut hair and a 33-23-33 figure. She has been called the perfect woman with the loveliest eyes.

52. The Affair - The Cliveden Party

Christine Keeler was not especially impressed with John Profumo when she met him at Lord Astor’s party. She was more interested in the Russian spy Eugene Ivanov.

When Christine left the party, Profumo asked her for her telephone number. She told him to talk with Stephen Ward. Meanwhile, MI5 were showing an interest in Ward’s friendship with Ivanov, and Profumo.

The second week of July 1961 saw a heatwave in London. On Saturday 8 July the temperature rose to 70 degrees. The atmosphere was close. Lord Astor decided to host one of his famous parties. John Profumo and his wife, actress Valerie Hobson, attended. Stephen Ward, who rented a cottage in Lord Astor’s grounds, also decided to host a party. Christine Keeler joined the fun.

Tests on a birth control pill for men are to be carried out soon. The pill has been tested with animals and the results are “most encouraging”.

The yearly total of drink convictions is now double that of the 1930s. There were 92,100 convictions in England and Wales in 1962, 10,000 more than the year before.

Paul Temple

Cravats! Medallions! Aviator Sunglasses!

Starring Francis Matthews and Ros Drinkwater, the Paul Temple television series, a BBC-Taurus Films co-production, ran from 1969-71. Fifty-two programmes were made, but many were later lost or destroyed.

Each episode took ten days to film, with a one-month break each year.
