letterboxd.comA ★★½ review of Hellboy: The Crooked Man (2024)It’s been rough going for Big Red since Guillermo Del Toro stepped away from him. The Hellboy franchise took a sharp downward turn with the ill-conceived 2020 reboot by Neil Marshall. With Hellboy: The Croooked Man, Millennium is trying again and the results are improved though, it’s still not exactly a winner. To its credit, I love the low-fi, folk horror vibes this film is giving. I enjoy the hell out of the GDT Hellboys, but those are slick superhero movies with a supernatural bent with a tone akin to the first Suicide Squad (albeit much better scripts and direction).
