I'm really excited that Harris as the candidate has energized young voters, but some of them have been like "I wasn't going to vote at all" and I'm sitting here thinking you weren't going to fucking WHAT
Like I get it, no one was thrilled about Biden, and young people can be dense and apathetic about politics, but...did you want to vote in a future election, like did you want that to be possible
@middleclasstool
I see both sides of it, honestly. I understand why it's important to vote, but our system is designed to disenfranchise people into not wanting to vote.
Like, I live in NE so the Primary was decided before I had a chance to vote for my candidate. It's weird that it goes to IA first. All of the primary voting should be done on the same day.
@jacklaridian Oh, I have total sympathy for that, yeah. I'd love to see the whole EC torn down, just for starters. But study after study shows that if young people voted as much their parents and grandparents do, this would be a radically different country. But that is the hardest sell in the world somehow, even when the survival of our democracy is on the line, and it's so frustrating.
@middleclasstool
Well, I'm not young but if I had to guess I would say that they don't fully trust the people telling them democracy is on the line, when both sides lie constantly about how dangerous the other side is.
Yeah, we know Trump isn't likely to concede power if he gets it again, but to them it sounds like both sides are just politicking.
'THE SKY IS FALLING!!'
Is it, though?
@middleclasstool
It's kind of insidious, if you think about it.
The RIGHT ramps up the rhetoric to 11.. 'JOE BIDEN IS A PEDO' and we all know that's just projection...
So when it comes out that JD Vance actually IS a pedophile, the LEFT is like, 'VANCE IS A PEDO' and the youth are just like, 'Yeah, yeah, everyone's a pedo. We get it. You hate the other guy.'
So when BOTH the left and right say the other guy is a 'threat to democracy' it loses all of its weight with some people.
