It is my contention, which I tried to convey in class yesterday, that this moment from Hot Fuzz emphasizes the film’s motif of doubling and repetition with the same sort of density as this e e cummings poem’s emphasis on “one” as a symbol of loneliness.

Positioned in the centre of the frame, wearing a jersey bisected by colour down the middle, Danny hold ups the DVDs of Point Break and Bad Boys II. Each cover has a title consisting of two single-syllable words (like Hot Fuzz itself), with Bad Boys II further underscoring the doubling by having the “II” in Roman numerals. Each cover also features the two male characters at the centre of their narratives.
The poem “l(a” by e. e. cummings. The poem could be read as “a leaf falls in loneliness” as the phrase “a leaf falls” is contained within the brackets of the broken up word “loneliness.” Cummings takes advantage of the fact that, on the typewriters of his period, the letter “l” and the number “1” were the same key, and so the word “loneliness” is broken up to become an endless repetition of the number one, as in “1” “one” “1” and “iness” (which we could read as “the condition of being “I”). In its layout, the verticality of the poem looks like the number 1 in a serif font.
